Church of St. Philip and James
The Franciscans have been present in this region since the Middle Ages, and their influence grew after the liberation from Turkish rule, when they started spreading the culture and religion and founding monasteries. In the first half of the 18th century bishop Nesselrod gave the permission for the construction of the Franciscan complex, the monastery and church. After 13 years, the construction was completed, but in the years to come, the complex was upgraded. On the church altar you can see the images by Ambrozije Janković, and the restoration was led by architect R. Jordan. The construction of the entire complex was completed in the late 19th century. During the Homeland War the Franciscans were expelled and the baroque church was demolished. The Franciscan monastery and church were renovated after the war and Vukovar boasts the third largest church in Croatia.
