The Bećar cross
The Bećar cross is the oldest stone cross crucifix in Vukovar. Since 1805, it has been located in the old part of the city, which is why it was named “Kod bećarskog križa (At the bećar cross)”. During the 19th century the bećar cross was surrounded by an iron fence, while underbrush grew around the crucifix. On the bećar cross you can identify the elements and details of classicism. Its importance lies in the fact that it was the first public stone cross, while all previous ones were wooden. The cross was not destroyed during the destruction and military occupation of the city in 1991, but in 1996. It was reconstructed 18 years later, and on 18 November 2009, on the day of remembrance of the victims of Vukovar, it was renovated and restored as a protected monument. It is now one of the symbols of the city of Vukovar.
