The Market (Rijeka)
The city market has been a favorite place of Rijeka’s locals since the late 19th century. Along the coast, near the pier where the fishermen unloaded their catch and carried it in baskets in order to sell it, the city market formed. In 1880, next to the market, the construction of two pavilions was started. However, the fish market was increasingly less compliant with hygiene expectations of the growing city, and thus the decision was made to build a new fish market. An architect from Rijeka, Carlo Pegoli, began working on in on the eve of the First World War.
