City Tower and Orpheus Monument (Ptuj-Slovenia)

One of the most interesting attractions in Ptuj is surely the city tower. The baptismal font of John the Baptist had formerly been located on the site of the tower. Later, it was removed and a new tower was built in 1556 with the help of the Italian Antonio de Riva. The tower is interesting because of its bow-like roof, embossed walls and tombstones. Most of the tombstones are located by the eastern wall and at the bottom of the stairwell, while their beautiful embossments show various scenes. At the top of the stairwell, You can see a lion and an altar dedicated to the god of war Marmogius and the god of the Sun. One more interesting thing is that the tower has four walls but only three clocks. The reason for this is that the owners of the castle didn’t contribute to the building of the tower, so there is one missing clock in their direction. Orpheus monument is along with the river Drava a symbol of Ptuj and is declared an important national cultural monument. It is located near the theater and city tower, where it had originally been built. It is the largest found monument on the site of the former Roman province Pannonia. The monument shows Orpheus mourning the loss of his beloved Eurydice. This mythical musician is best known for his beautiful playing of the lyre, which was enjoyed by men, animals, and even the god of the underworld. Originally, the monument was built in the 2nd century in the honor of major Marcus Valerius Verus. During the Middle Ages, it served as a public punishment spot, and the proof to that are two iron extensions at the bottom of the monument that served as a handcuffs.
