Wat Mahathat (Buddha head in the tree) (Ayutthaya-Thailand)
Wat Mahathat is a royal temple built in the 14th century and it used to be a residence of the Supreme Patriarch. It was and still is a sacred place, even though there are only ruins left, due to the 18th century Burmese invasion. The site was restaurated by the Department of Fine Art in 1950s. Nowadays, it is most famous for a stone Buddha head that is grown into the roots of a Bodhi tree. There are several theories how the head got there, but the most likely one is that temple robbers left it on the ground while running away with their prey. Note that this site is sacred, it is not allowed to touch the head or the tree. Furthermore, Your pictures should be taken while on Your knees (to show respect).
