Wat Mongkhon Bophit (Ayutthaya-Thailand)
Mongkhon Bophit was named after a bronze sitting Buddha statue of the same name. It is assumed that the statue was made in 15th century and it was meant to be placed outside. However, for the past few centuries and up to this day, the statue has been covered and placed in viharn (type of a shrine). There is also a record of it being damaged significantly several times: in 1700s when lightning struck it and its head fell off, and in a fire when Ayutthaya was destroyed. Today, the temple is situated south of the Royal Palace ruins, while the Buddha statue sits inside the viharn and is now covered in gold.
