Wat Phra Si Sanphet (Ayutthaya-Thailand)

This temple was built on the grounds of the Royal Palace, becoming thus a royal temple of the Kingdom of Ayutthaya. It was originally built in the middle of the 15th century, but some of the today’a famous features were added later on. Speaking of famous features, definitely the most attractive ones are the three pagodas, in which ashes of three kings who constructed parts of this temple are being kept. Another feature is a 16 meters high standing Buddha statue that used to be covered in gold before invaders came. Apart from the pagodas, there is also a number of small chedis that store ashes of other royal family members. An interesting fact is that monks don’t reside there, but they do attend royal ceremonies. Today, the temple is quite modest because most valuables were moved to Bangkok when it became the new capital. However, its simplicity is exactly what makes it interesting.
