The Water Gate was built around 1710 on the site of the then city gate. The gate was designed by Eugene of Savoy, engineer Jean Petis de la Croix and captain Stephan von Beckers. The gate was upgraded in the second half of the 18th century when a sewer was placed before it, and the bastion of St Eugene was restored so that it stretched on a somewhat larger area. Those works were led by Nicolas Doxata de Demorete. The facade was built in memory of the Slavonian border guards from Gradiška and Regiment of Brod who fought against King Friedrich the Great. There once were the Water or North Gate, the New or South Gate, the Valpovo or West Gate and the Imperial or east Gate, but the Water Gate is the only one that remains. A plaque was built in memory of the designer Stephan von Beckers.
