Church of St John the Baptist (Budva-Montenegro)
The Church of St John the Baptist is one of the most important sacral buildings in Budva, which until 1828 was the seat of the diocese. Historical evidence does not indicate the exact year of construction, but it is believed that the original church was built in the 7th century, and today’s church has been built on precisely these foundations. It is believed that today’s church was erected about 1200 years ago. The church was destroyed in 1667 by an earthquake, after which it was completely restored. In the church, “Madonna in Punta” is kept, the icon of the Virgin with Christ – one of the oldest icons in this area and the greatest saincity of the Old Town. The church is in the very heart of the old town of Budva and exits on the largest square in the Old Town. Various events take place in the square during the summer months.
