St. Joseph Church
St. Joseph Church (Ayutthaya-Thailand)
Church of St. Joseph was founded by French missionaries in the 17th century. Back then, it served as the center of the French Catholic Mission almost the entire century, until the destruction of Ayutthaya in 1767. It was built in a Romanesque style which reflects in its light yellow color and location along the banks of the river. The highlights of the church are the clock, dome and stained-glass window which shows biblical stories.
It has been built and renovated several times and is nowadays an active church where masses are held every Saturday night and Sunday morning. Beside the church, there is a cemetery which is considered to contain some of the original tombstones. In the garden of the church, there are small lakes with water lilies and sculptures next to the water.
