Church of St. Blaise (Dubrovnik)
The Church of St. Blaise was built in 1715 on the foundations of an older church which was damaged and burned in a fire in 1706. That fire only left the silver statue of St. Blaise intact. It was then moved to the Church of St. Nicholas and was later returned to the new church of St. Blaise built by Marino Gropelli from Venice. St. Blaise has been venerated by the people of Dubrovnik since the 10th century. He informed the priest Stojko about the incoming attack of the Venetians so the people had enough time to come up with a strategy to defend the city. The priest described St. Blaise as a white-haired old man with a long beard, a bishop’s hat and a cane in his hand, just as he is depicted on the city walls and towers. Dubrovnik’s Feast of St. Blaise is celebrated on February 3rd, which was also declared the Day of Dubrovnik.
