The Captain cemetery
In the 19th century the seafaring of Pelješac and Orebić was at its peak. Pelješac had around 5000, and Orebić around 500 inhabitants. In Pelješac there were 90 sailing ships sail out with about 2,000 sailors and 250 captains who acquired considerable wealth. According to surviving records from the 16th century, there were 43 captains in the most famous family Orebić. This one and other rich old families built beautiful monuments in cemeteries and mausoleums. On the Orebić cemetery, within the Franciscan monastery there is a place called the captain cemetery.
