People’s Square (Piazza)
The first inhabited part of Split outside Diocletian’s Palace, located along its western edge, developed into a square known as the Piazza. Its real name is the People’s Square. The square was first mentioned under the name of Širina Sv. Lovre. The old Gothic building, which is now an exhibition hall, housed the city hall. On the edges of the Piazza there were palaces of the noble Split families. The bookstore Morpurgo, which was opened in 1861 and which is one of the oldest bookstores in the world, is also located on the Piazza. There is also a Renaissance town clock. On Piazza one can find many restaurants, bars and shops frequently visited by both locals and tourists.
