St. Claire Monastery
The most famous female monastery in Dubrovnik was built in the 13th and 14th century. The nuns were most often the noblewomen of Dubrovnik who opened a shelter for abandoned children. They took care of the children until they were six years old, after what they were taken into good families. During Napoleon’s occupation of Dubrovnik, the monastery was abolished and turned into an ammunition dump and a stable. In the 1667 earthquake, the monastery was severely ruined and the city authorities had it restored. After World War II, the monastery became a restaurant and open-air cinema, and today it is a multi-purpose space.
