Great cave
Great cave
Northeast of Vela Luka, on the hillside of Pinski rat, there is an important archaeological site – the Great cave. As evidenced by the cave, this area has been inhabited from the prehistoric times to the present. Apart from the artefacts from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age, items from the Greek, Roman and Byzantine period were found. Part of the findings is kept in the museum located in the centre of Vela Luka. There is a 2,5 kilometre-long road leading to the cave, as well as a kilometre-long walking trail going up the hill of Pinski rat. The cave is facing south, offering a magnificent view of the bay and the surrounding islands. The width of this 4 metre-high cave entrance ranges from 1 to 10 metres.
