The prison building is one of the largest buildings in the Old town of Kotor and is a kind of cultural monument. The prison were built by Austria in the middle of the 19th century, and in order to build the prison they were forced to demolish several buildings in this area, among them was the Church of St Paul and Joseph. The Kotor prison is located in a three-storey building with thick walls and is made of stone and brick, and the windows are protected by iron. Windows were painted in yellow which was a trademark of the prison in the time of the Austrian rule, and among the people were known as the “yellow houses”. The first prisoners were involved in the uprisings in Grblje and in Krivošije in 1869 after the introduction of a general military obligation. In the 1990s it was closed and abandoned.
